Hane-chan is a “hane” koi.
Nishikigoi are carefully selected from tens of thousands of fry, choosing only those with beautiful colours, patterns and body shapes. The fish that fail to meet the standards during this process are called “hane” (rejects).

When I was a child, my father gave me some Hane carp to raise. These Hane-chan, who had been eliminated from the selection process based on human-defined relative value and were forced to live by their own absolute worth, satyed by my side - I, too, shared that same sense of inadequacy.
